5 Foods That Might Boost Your Chances Against Cancer

Cancer has become a major concern across the world and we understand it can be a scary possibility. Luckily, there are some scientific advances on the front of food. Certain chemicals in food or the qualities they contain can help fight cancer cells or make your body not as pleasant a place for cancer to inhabit. None of this is solid fact yet, but something is better than nothing. Here are just five of the foods that might help you fight your risk of cancer and other nasty diseases.
1. Blueberries
To understand why blueberries are number one on our list, you know of something called free radicals. They’re compounds, more specifically unstable ones, that can cause damage and leave you prone to cancer. The best way to combat free radicals is antioxidants which is found in food. Blueberries are one of the greatest sources of these antioxidants, so consider adding them to your breakfast cereal, into some yogurt, in dessert, or just eat a handful straight.
2. Salmon
There has been some research lately that claims that people who eat four or more servings of fish every week are one third less likely to develop blood cancers. And fish with a high fat content, such as salmon or tuna, reduces a woman’s risk for endometrial cancer. The reason? Omega 3’s, found in these fish, reduces inflammation and protects brain and heart functions which are vital to fight cancer.
3. Tea
More specifically, black tea is highly recommended for women. If you’re willing to drink two cups of the stuff every day, you’ll find yourself 32% less likely of ovarian cancer. That’s because black tea is filled with flavonoids, which is plant equivalent of antioxidants. And we’ve noted before just how crucial those are.
4. Avocado
We’ve stated twice now how important antioxidants are if you’re trying to avoid cancer. But did you know you can help your body absorb antioxidants better? That you can get more nutrients out of your food, making your eating choices more effective? Monounsaturated fats, such as those found in avocados, actually assists your body in absorbing those wonderful antioxidants. So pair avocado with salmon or corn to get the best bang for your metaphorical buck.
5. Corn
Don’t worry, we’re not going to say the word antioxidants again. Oops. This food staples is actually high in another cancer fighting nutrient called ferulic acid. Ferulic acid fights against substances that can cause cancer, helping lower your risks. As an added bonus, there are any number of ways to eat this food, so get creative and enjoy!
